ReciprocalLink.Com / Ask ReciprocalLink.Com / Question 1

At ReciprocalLink.Com, we try to answer your questions pertaining to reciprocal links. While we can not answer every piece of E-Mail individually (though we will try!), we will list common questions and answers here. If you have a question regarding reciprocal links, visit our comments page.

1) I just want to link to a website. I'm not looking for a reciprocal link. Must I get permission?

A: Most webmasters will not mind this seemingly free form of advertising. Do not bet on this, though, especially with larger sites. A framed website a while ago "linked" to several news sites. The news would appear in one frame while an advertising banner appeared in another. Since this framed website linked directly to news articles instead of the news websites' front pages, they were forced to stop this practice. You may also want to visit the search engines for the case TicketMaster(tm) had against Microsoft(tm) due to their linking practices.

To be safe, if you want to place a link to a website, only link to the website's front page. Look around the website and see if they have any HTML link codes, banners, or buttons you can use. Consider E-Mailing the webmaster of the site, letting them know you want to provide a link from your site to theirs. You never know - that E-Mail may even result in a reciprocal link from their site to yours!
